Tea has always been more than just a drink. It’s a journey of flavors and fragrances. Today, let’s learn 5 uniquely aromatic Chinese teas.
Tie Guan Yin is a celebrated oolong tea originating from Xiping, Anxi, in Fujian Province. This tea has a fascinating history dating back to the Qianlong Emperor’s reign. A local named Wang Shirang presented it to the court, where it earned high praise and was named “Tie Guan Yin” due to its heavy, iron-like appearance and its delicate, orchid-like fragrance.
This tea is known for its “green leaves with red edges” and a flavor that lingers through multiple infusions. The aroma is a natural orchid scent that remains potent even after several brews, earning it the reputation of “seven brews with a lingering fragrance.”
Keemun black tea, or Qimen Hong Cha, hails from Qimen County in Anhui Province. It stands proudly as one of the world’s top three black teas. Known internationally for its delicate and sophisticated aroma, it’s often referred to as the “Keemun fragrance.”
Keemun’s fragrance is unique, often described as a rose-like aroma by the Japanese and simply “Keemun fragrance” by the British. Its fine processing and intricate craftsmanship produce tightly twisted leaves, a deep, bright red infusion, and a long-lasting, sweet fragrance.
Bi Luo Chun is from Dongting Mountain in Suzhou, Jiangsu Province. It is a green tea known for its striking fragrance. Initially called “Scary Fragrance” due to its intense aroma, it was later renamed by Emperor Kangxi to Bi Luo Chun, reflecting its beautiful appearance and spring harvest.
This tea is distinctive for its fruity aroma, a result of the tea plants growing among fruit trees. The leaves are tightly rolled and have a unique, sweet fragrance that subtly blends with floral notes.
Phoenix Dan Cong, an oolong tea from Phoenix Town in Chaozhou, Guangdong Province, is known for its intense fragrance and unique taste. Combining the best of green and black tea processing methods, Phoenix Dan Cong offers a rich, fresh flavor with a long-lasting aftertaste.
Named after Phoenix Mountain, this tea’s standout feature is its extraordinary aroma, coupled with its sturdy, plump, and glossy leaves.
Wuyi Rock Tea, particularly Rougui and Shuixian varieties, is famed for its unique rock aroma. Rougui is celebrated for its strong, complex fragrance that includes hints of cinnamon and caramel. In contrast, Shuixian is known for its smooth, mellow taste that is both light and enduring.
The saying “fragrant Rougui, mellow Shuixian” highlights the distinct characteristics of these teas. They are the star varieties of Wuyi Rock Tea, each offering a different yet equally captivating sensory experience.
