The Han Wa teapot is one of the styles of Yixing teapots. It draws its inspiration from the Han Dynasty architectural element known as “Wadang”, meaning a tile, which is a distinct cultural symbol.
The Han Wa teapot is also recognized as one of the eighteen shapes created by Chen Mansheng, a renowned Yixing teapot artist.
The origins of clay tiles can be traced back to the Neolithic period, approximately ten thousand years ago, making them contemporaneous with the invention of pottery. The semicircular tiles emerged during the Western Han Dynasty. China began manufacturing tiles in the early Western Zhou Dynasty, around the 11th century BCE. During the Spring and Autumn and Warring States periods, square and rectangular bricks were developed, with the earliest bricks appearing in tombs from the 5th to the 3rd century BCE. The technology, production scale, quality, and variety of brick-making experienced significant advancements during the Qin and Han Dynasties, earning them the epithet “Qin brick, Han tile.”
Although the resplendence of the “Qin brick, Han tile” has long been submerged in the mists of history, as a distinctive cultural symbol of the Qin and Han periods, it vividly embodies the profound and vast legacy of Chinese civilization. Even to this day, the “Qin brick, Han tile” continues to astonish and inspire admiration for the mysterious aura it exudes, reminiscent of the sound of thunder in silence. The Han Wa teapot is designed based on the shape of Han Dynasty tiles, paying homage to their distinctive form and cultural significance.
