Lang Hong (郎红), also known as Langyao Hong, is an epoch-making work of Jingdezhen’s red glaze porcelain. It is the only porcelain variety named after the surname of the superintendent of kilns in the history of Chinese ceramics.
During the Kangxi period of the Qing Dynasty, it was fired by Lang Tingji, the superintendent of kilns. Its color is like freshly congealed ox blood, and its glaze is as elegant as glass. It has the characteristics of “bright as a mirror, smooth as jade, and red as blood”. It is known as “a treasure among thousands of kilns”.
The firing process of Lang Hong
During the Kangxi period, the court appointed Lang Tingji as the superintendent of kilns in Jingdezhen to imitate the ruby red glaze porcelain of the Xuande period of the Ming Dynasty.
Firing at a high temperature of more than 1300 degrees Celsius requires extremely high requirements for kiln temperature and other aspects, and the yield is low. Lang Tingji personally went deep into the workshop and studied the material formula with the craftsmen. After hundreds of failures, he finally fired Langyao Hong porcelain.
The influence of Lang Hong
Langyao Hong is not only popular in China but also highly sought after by collectors in Europe and America. It is regarded as a divine product in the antique circle.
