His story dates back to the Tang Dynasty, where he was a scholar who committed suicide after being unfairly denied the title of “Number One Scholar” by the emperor due to his disfigured appearance. After his death, Zhong Kui was appointed by the Jade Emperor as the king of ghosts due to his loyalty and sense of justice. He is often depicted as a fierce warrior wielding a sword, symbolizing his role as a protector against evil spirits. Zhong Kui’s image is commonly used in households to ward off evil and bring good fortune.
